Safe Routes to School: Big Wins for Glendale,
Summer Work Underway

Street improvements near six GUSD sites are underway and set for completion before school starts, funded by the $898,560 Caltrans Cycle 8 Safe Routes to School Grant awarded to Glendale in 2009. Work is taking place around the R.D. White, Verdugo Woodlands, Balboa, Columbus, Dunsmore and Woodrow Wilson Middle School campuses. These projects have goals similar to those of Walk Bike Glendale – improvements that make streets safer for all users: children and families walking to school, bicycling, or driving to drop off or pick up students.

Working with Glendale staff, Safe Routes to School advocate Kara Sergile helped identify needs and win the grant. More success has followed: Glendale won a Caltrans Cycle 9 grant for $449,140, funding similar improvements around the Glenoaks, Jefferson, Marshall, Mann, Muir, and Lincoln campuses. That work will probably be done next year.

Last fall, Glendale won a Safe Routes to School Federal Cycle 3 award of $1 million – $500,000 for infrastructure improvements around Franklin, Cerritos, Edison, Valley View and Chamlian school campuses, and $500,000 for education and encouragement. (Those funds have not been “obligated” yet…but will be soon). Glendale just heard that it also received a Caltrans Cycle 10 award that can be used to complete more projects proposed in Cycle 8!
