New historic signs in Glendale, California feature outdated neighborhood names unfamiliar to some current residents.

The city just added more signs to Glendale’s crowded streetscape, this time to highlight former historic neighborhood names.

Glendale recently completed installation of street signs throughout city neighborhoods denoting their historic names. The signs are on major streets entering each neighborhood.

The names of the districts are based on this map developed several years ago. The signs replace similar signs taken down in the 1970s because the City Council believed they were divisive and emphasized loyalty to neighborhoods rather than to the city as a whole. The old signs were sold off as surplus property in a retail shop located in the Glendale Galleria in those years.

The current signs each feature a unique emblem meant to replicate the design on the corresponding area’s earlier sign. Some of the earlier emblems have been lost, so a replacement design was used in those instances.

Some of the names (such as Rossmoyne and Verdugo Woodlands) remain the name of those neighborhoods today. Others do not. Residents in certain areas, such as Northwest Glendale between Glenwood and Pacific avenues, question the historic accuracy of the unfamiliar name “Glenwood” given to that area. The area between Pacific Avenue and Brand Boulevard was given the historic name of “Verdugo Viejo,” probably based on the historic Casa Verdugo located in that area, but that name is unfamiliar to residents as a designation for their neighborhood.

In any event, the signs themselves do not say “historic,” and give the impression that the names are current ones. Some residents would have preferred signs featuring the current name of their neighborhood, as signs in Los Angeles do, but Glendale did not adopt that alternative.

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Coalition will hold a discussion with the LA DWP about existing utility pole mounted wireless antennae at its meeting December 5, 2009.

The next Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Coalition meeting will feature a discussion with the LA Department of Water and Power regarding existing utility pole mounted cell sites “that seem to be popping up like weeds all over the city” (including the site featured yesterday on this blog).

According to the LANCC email notice:

The discussion will include who actually controls them; who approves them; and why we don’t get notice before they go up in our neighborhoods. If you have question for the DWP send them to us before the meeting so we can submit them to the DWP in order to insure we get some answers on Saturday.

Angelenos working to keep cell sites out of residential areas have noticed more and more such sites appearing suddenly and without notice.

The coalition meeting will be held Saturday, December 5, 10:00 a.m. at the Hollywood Constituent Center, 6501 Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles. Contact info@lanccoalition.org for more information.

Glendale, California Little League signups are being held January 17 and January 24, 2009.

Glendale-area Little Leagues give players an appreciation for baseball, and parents and families a great way to meet each other. One benefit of signing up with Little League is the local connection: leagues recruit within neighborhood boundaries, and practices and games are all on nearby fields (Brand Park, Babe Herman Field, Pelanconi Park, and Scholl Canyon).

Signups and tryouts for Glendale-area Little Leagues, including Jewel City JWV Little League and Foothill Little League are taking place this Saturday, January 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Brand Park.

Signups are for all players between the ages of 5 and 15; tryouts are only for baseball and softball players from 9-15 years of age. Players should bring a glove and wear loose fitting clothes and cleats. Families should bring a certified copy of player’s birth certificate for the league’s file, proof of address (driver’s license, cable bill or utility bill), and personal insurance information.

Last chance for signups and tryouts will be the following Saturday, January 24, at Babe Herman Field on Canada Blvd. (across the street from Verdugo Park). Practices begin in February, and games begin in March.

Glendale Organized Against Cell Towers urges all neighbors not to take away the great lawn signs protesting T-Mobile's attempt to get cell towers into residential areas. The fight at city hall is not yet over!

Wednesday night, the Glendale city council voted for a 45-day moratorium to consider a comprehensive wireless telecommunications ordinance for the city. GOACT (Glendale Organized Against Cell Towers) had mobilized citizen opposition to installation towers in residential areas, like the one T-Mobile had just received a permit to build on Cumberland Road near Pacific Ave.

Neighbors: Don’t take those great lawn signs down! In fact, get others on your street to post signs on their lawns as well. This fight is not over. T-Mobile was poised to sue the city if a moratorium was enacted, but apparently the company was dissuaded by overwhelming negative publicity and attention. They aren’t going away, though, and neither are other cell carriers who are fighting over Glendale neighborhood market share.

GOACT will be in close contact with city staff as they develop policies and procedures during the moratorium – read my next post for details about those. T-Mobile is going to be in close contact as well. Stay tuned.
