La Cañada Presbyterian Church will hold a Suit Donation Day Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., inviting friends and neighbors to drive through its parking lot (626 Foothill Blvd., La Canada) to donate suits to men and women seeking jobs.

The partner in this effort, Clothes the Deal, distributes over 15,000 articles of business clothing to over 6,000 job seekers annually. Business clothing from the event will be distributed at a later time to individuals who have completed work-training programs throughout Los Angeles County and to LCPC Ministry Partners Door of Hope, Elizabeth House, Walter Hoving Home and Union Rescue Mission.

The program helps those who need jobs the most to prepare for job interviews and the working world. Those making donations will be invited to get out of their cars and enjoy a fun afternoon, with food trucks, a bouncy for the kids, a special appearance by ABC7 Eyewitness News Weatherman Dallas Raines, music by LCPC’s contemporary praise band and the raffle of a free iPad. Comedian and juggler Ron Pearson, who has opened for George Lopez, will be the emcee.

Donations can include new and gently-worn men’s and women’s suits, dresses, skirts, shirts, blouses, belts, ties, shoes and slacks. For more information, please go to www.lacanadapc.org, or contact LCPC Director of Communications Camille Tucker at 818.790.6708 x 621.

Editor’s note: The poem below was written by Kathleen Campbell and submitted in memory of Meri Nalbandyan, who was killed in the crosswalk between Hoover High School and Toll Middle School two years ago today.

MERI’S WALK

Meri’s walk, Meri’s walk, I feel her presence though she doesn’t talk. Her voice was silenced way too soon. In the morning before an afternoon of pure distress and tragedy for children witnessing calamity.

Parents distracted on their way to work. Get the kids on time so we choose to jerk around cars in our way and take a chance that we won’t cause damage or circumstance that cannot be erased and shouldn’t be.

Meri’s walk was built for you and me to have a path of security from one side of the street to the other. You can hold hands with your brother. But the rules and the guards have a reason to be a protector of you and of Meri.

She can see how we zip and spin through a life too precious not be present in.

Meri’s walk, Meri’s walk, asks us to slow down and don’t just talk about the days events or celebrity, stop look and listen, treasure safety.

Life is precious so plan ahead so no other pedestrian ends up dead.

Southern California activists and national organization Green Scissors call for action against 710 Tunnel project proposal.

Local 710 Tunnel opponents are sounding the alarm as scoping and environmental studies accelerate, and the national organization Green Scissors ranks the project #1 among line items that should be cut from the federal budget.

Assemblyman Anthony Portantino wrote that residents need to act and speak up in 710 Tunnel could devastate the region, published in the latest La Canada Sun.

Another call to action came over radio waves September 22 as KRLA’s Kevin James interviewed Janet Dodson of the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council. Dodson said the project “is absolutely stoppable at this point. The coalition against the 710 is struggling at every stage. At the moment the MTA is continuing along with environmental impact reports, after they’ve jumped several steps. They’ve moved on past EIRs when they should not have. Public pressure is hugely important here.” Listen to that interview segment here.

Dodson also mentions the Green Scissors’ 2010 Report. Scroll to page 16 to see the tunnel project listed. The complete report “identifies more than $200 billion in wasteful government subsidies that are damaging to the environment and harmful to consumers.”
