Hollywood Literary Variety Show Comes to Icis in Glendale


tongue&grooveAnother great literary program heads to Glendale! Tongue & Groove, a monthly literary variety show nominated for “Best Reading” by LA Weekly, will be held Sunday, September 22, 6-7:30pm at Icis, the new apartment residence complex at 546 W. Colorado Blvd., Glendale.

The show, in its 10th year of production, is a regular attraction at Hollywood’s Hotel Cafe, offering unique storytelling performances of short fiction, personal essays and music. The Icis September event will feature Armenian, Filipino and Cuban writers including internationally known poet Alene Terzian, published author Rachelle Cruz, international touring storyteller Antonio Sacre, creative non-fiction writer Shahe Mankerian and rock musician Chuck Lee Bramlet.

I visited Icis’ meeting rooms back in April. They are plush and welcoming, and the adjoining deck / pool area features views of Griffith Park. The Tongue & Groove readings will be in the Zen Garden. Leasing staff and signage will be onsite to direct guests.

Alene Terzian received an M.A. and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry. Her first book, Deep as City’s Ache, explores the Lebanese Civil Conflict both environmentally and psychologically, emphasizing the humanistic elements of war. She teaches at College of the Canyons, advises on the literary magazine called cul-de-sac and was elected as the Poet Laureate of Altadena, CA. Her poems have appeared in many local anthologies and she has edited several collections, including Edges and Hold.

Shahe Mankerian spent his formative years in Beirut, Lebanon. After migrating to the U.S, he received his graduate degree in English from California State University, L.A. In 2003, he won both the Erika Mumford Prize and the Daniel Varoujan Award from the New England Poetry Club. His poem “She’s Hiding My Keys” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. His play Vort (Worm) was adapted into a short film and his play “Little Armenia” debuted at Hollywood’s prestigious Fountain Theatre.

Antonio Sacre is an internationally touring writer, storyteller, and solo performance artist. He has performed at the National Book Festival at the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, the National Storytelling Festival, and museums, schools, libraries, and festivals internationally. His storytelling recordings have won numerous awards. The NYC International Fringe Theater Festival, awarded him a Excellence in Acting, and a Best in Fest award for his in Solo Performance. Since 1994, he has taught drama, storytelling, and writing to teachers and students nationwide.

Rachelle Cruz is the author of the chapbook, Self-Portrait as Rumor and Blood (Dancing Girl Press,2012). Her work is forthcoming or has appeared in New California Writing 2013 (Heyday Books), Yellow Medicine Review, Jet Fuel Review,The Lit Pub, The Bakery, Stone Highway, The Collagist, Bone Bouquet, PANK Magazine, Muzzle Magazine, Splinter Generation, KCET’s Departures Series, Inlandia: A Literary Journey, among others. She hosts The Blood-Jet Writing Hour on Blog Talk Radio, and is the Podcast Editor at The Collagist. She is a recent recipient of the Manuel G. Flores Scholarship from PAWA (Philippine American Writers and Arists, Inc). An Emerging Voices Fellow, a Kundiman Fellow and a VONA writer, she lives, writes and teaches in Southern California.

Chuck Lee Bramlet played voraciously on anything he could find with strings from the age of eight. He fell in love with everything from Western Classical music to early rock and surf tunes. Chuck was an original member of The Violets in Portland Oregon, and did a stint as bass player for roots-pop gurus Gingersol. He plays all things stringed, plus some club-foot piano, and sings.Three records have been released under his name, 2003’s POOKS ROAD, 2004’s MURDER OF CROWS, and 2010’s BURN DOWN START OVER.
