Support Our Libraries!

As state and local governments have cut library budgets, the Glendale library system needs friends in this community. The Friends of the Glendale Public Library are holding a spring membership drive, with the goal of at least 300 new members.

Be a friend! Join as a special friend or business and get listed regularly in the quarterly newsletter. Friends receive special mailings, notices of events, early admission to great book sales, and the satisfaction of contributing to a valued public service.

Last week I visited the library to help with a donated book sale. Books from various collections and for almost nothing (50 cents for paperbacks, $1 for hardbacks) were transferred to new owners for ongoing use. Proceeds from these and other sales run by the Friends of the Glendale Public Library fund acquisitions and programs.

I also visited the library last week to return a software manual I wanted to renew but couldn’t because it had been requested by another library client (if there is a hold pending on a book, its current borrower cannot renew!). For the time I had the book, I used it to learn some of the advanced features of new software installed on my PC.

The information economy has a short-term outlook: profit and market share (think $1 billion Facebook paid for Instagram last week). Our public libraries offer free content and serve all demographics. Libraries connect us to the past and prepare us for the future.
