710 Tunnel on National Group’s List of Wasteful Spending Projects that Harm the Environment 1

The 2011 Green Scissors report just released by a bipartisan coalition puts the 710 Tunnel second on a top list of projects the Congressional Super Committee should cut from the federal budget.

Environmental group Friends of the Earth, deficit hawk Taxpayers for Common Sense, consumer watchdog Public Citizen and free-market think tank The Heartland Institute comprise the unusual coalition that developed the report.

Excerpt from the introduction: “Building on last year’s detailed cut lists, Green Scissors 2011 identifies more than $380 billion in wasteful government subsidies that are damaging to the environment and harming taxpayers.”

The San Francisco Chronicle notes: “The report arrives as the Congressional Budget Office delivers another grim prognosis that this year’s deficit will be $1.3 trillion, the third highest ever, surpassed only by deficits of the last two years.”

Green Scissors’ Memo to the Congressional Super Committee, says that its recommendations amount “to a full quarter of the savings the [committee] has been charged with obtaining, in half the time.” The memo/press release includes supportive comments from congressional representatives.

Green Scissors’ 2010 report also targeted the 710 Tunnel Project.
