Homeowners Need Clout: “Outreach” Doesn’t Suffice 1

The voluntary association of homeowner groups in Glendale benefits each of them. Their umbrella organization has clout advocating for desirable policies, or pushing for remedies when one or more groups are threatened.

Glendale Rancho Homeowners Association President Joanne Hedge just published a detailed report on Caltrans’ freeway expansion project in Saturday’s Glendale News-Press, finding fault with the state agency’s lack of outreach, and notifying residents of a community meeting she’s organizing with Caltrans officials.

Their tree-line defense is gone, and adjacent property owners will lose more insulation from the interstate corridor as a retaining wall is also slated for removal. It isn’t clear what they can do now, but at least the established homeowners’ group experienced in working with the city and Caltrans will be fielding and forwarding concerns.

The Glendale Homeowners Coordinating Council May meeting takes place tonight (7 p.m., in the Glendale Police Department Community Room) and features Glendale Police Chief Ron De Pompa speaking about budget cuts, probationers’ early release program, and neighborhood watch. Homeowner associations send two voting members each: they report to the group and carry news back to their neighborhoods. Hedge will likely present an update on the freeway project. Homeowners: take note and get involved.
