Kaiser Video With R.D. White’s “Walking School Bus”; Glendale Pushes School Traffic Safety

Glendale’s Safe and Healthy Streets Draft Plan has been proceeding through hearings on its way to City Council, with comments taken by appointed commissioners and strong support from the public.

The plan’s school traffic safety ideas are complemented by the strong Safe Routes to School volunteer program in Glendale. Part of that program, R.D. White Elementary’s “Walking School Bus”, was just featured in this Kaiser Foundation video, Everybody WALK (click on the Walking School Bus box). Clips throughout show R.D. White students walking with their group to school on a rainy morning.

When the plan was presented to the Transportation and Parking Commission January 24, Commissioner Yacoubian asked that it include specific outreach to private and well as public schools. The Glendale Police Department has already acted on this suggestion: Glendale News-Press reports that Officer Matt Bolton made a traffic safety presentation to students at Chamlian Armenian School.

At the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission meeting February 10, Commissioner Patric asked that the educational portion of the plan stress trail sharing safety guidelines for hikers and mountain bikes.

The Planning Commission, Traffic and Parking Commission, and Parks Commission have all approved the plan, some as noted above with additional comments.

No date has yet been set for the plan’s review and adoption by the Glendale City Council.
