EMF Safety Network Files Appeal on Smart Meters;
Consumer Groups File Smart Meter Privacy Concerns

The EMF Safety Network, based in Sonoma county, submitted an Application for Rehearing on the issue of Smart Meters at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) January 5. The group alleges that the RF from Smart Meters pose serious public health, safety and environmental impacts.

The appeal calls the CPUC’s December 2, 2010 dismissal of its original application a legal error, as the commission based its decision on FCC guidelines instead of assuming primary responsibility for utility regulation duties.

EMF Safety Network head Sandi Maurer states, “The CPUC has investigated radiation (RF) impacts prior to the Smart Meter mandate. In 1995 they recognized public perception of harm, warned that financial interests should not trump health impacts, and ordered follow up workshops on the subject. They also could not confirm or deny a health risk. We urge the CPUC to put public health before utility profits.”

The EMF Safety Network alleges legal error by citing dozens of legal authorities, including the California Constitution Declaration of Rights. The Network also alleges violations of FCC Regulations, citing a study by Sage Associates that was released this week: Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation Emissions from Smart Meters.

The Consumer Federation of California recently filed this brief expressing concern over third-party access to utility customers’ usage and billing information transmitted via smart meters, while the Division of Ratepayer Advocates filed a brief asserting that utilities deploying smart meters must ensure customer privacy.

  1. GET USED TO IT.

    PG&E has already killed people in Hinkley, California and San Bruno California and other places less well known.

    Why are you people complaining about Wireless smart meters? Do you think you deserve better than those adults and children that have already been killed by PG&E?

    I just don’t understand you people. PG&E Corporate has a record of killing and sickening people throughout the state and that’s not going to change.

    Why don’t you people just accept it, like the rest of us?

  2. I’m trying to get the word out that Northwest Lineman College is trying to get a permit here in Butte Co. Ca to build 12 structures for the new smart meter training program. It will be a mock subdivision for smart meter training “in real life scenarios”…..Oroville Mercury-Register, Feb.12,2011
