Santa Fe, New Mexico Wireless Ordinance Passes Despite Residents’ and Industry Complaints

Opponents and advocates of wireless technology expansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico both argued that rules for wireless installations developed over the past seven months wouldn’t serve that city’s interests, but after a long public hearing elected officials approved the new wireless ordinance. Residents and local media tried to learn from Glendale’s experience during months of debate.

Residents are concerned about franchise agreements that could cause cell sites to proliferate in the public right-of-way, while telecom industry reps were concerned about the city’s proposed fee schedule for installations.

The meeting lasted almost until midnight, with forty-one people speaking on issues related to wireless technology, broadband, public right-of-way and private-property installations, and fiber-optic alternatives.
