710 Tunnel on Measure R Committee’s May 20 Agenda: Staff Recommend Alternatives Analysis

Getting the 710 North extension project into the next phase is on the May 20 agenda of MTA’s Measure R Project Delivery Committee.

MTA staff wrote this recommendation for the 710 Tunnel Project in their report (italics added):

…the Board could decide that there is enough information contained in the final geotechnical tunnel study to proceed to the next steps in the project which lead to environmental clearance and preliminary engineering. This would mean preparing a robust scoping document and conducting an alternatives analysis to update the purpose and need for the project and identify new strategies for further consideration. Staff recommends this alternative because it is more comprehensive and it may result in a program of improvements that are acceptable to communities that currently oppose closing the gap.

The committee’s deliberations are just ahead of the May 27 MTA Board meeting at which the 710 Tunnel project is expected to come up for a decisive vote.
