A determined tone, and confidence in the face of continuing trials marked both GCC President Dr. Dawn Linsdsay’s State of the College Address, and Sports Chalet CEO Craig Levra’s Business Lecture that followed it yesterday at the College.

Lindsay made it clear that difficult times have made GCC more cohesive and determined to fulfill its core educational and workforce development mission. Levra told the audience how Sports Chalet, with stores in 34 of the 35 U.S. counties hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis, took a swift and proactive approach to cutting costs, reaching out to vendors and customers, and differentiating itself from the competition.

A learning experience for the students: how a local educational institution and a business that started in the area have responded, refocused, and planned for future success during the Great Recession.
