Glendale Wireless Ordinance Set for Approval 1

Glendale’s new wireless ordinance is set for approval next week as new mayor Ara Najarian and all four city council members spoke in its favor at last night’s regular council meeting.

Public Works Counsel Christina Sansone presented a report on the proposed ordinance to council and a proposed addendum that would allow public hearings for some public right-of-way installations. Members of the original neighborhood group GOACT and others spoke in favor of the ordinance. Industry representatives and Judee Kendall of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce expressed satisfaction that the moratorium on new installations would soon be lifted.

Among the comments:

“The ordinance provides sensible guidelines for wireless installations. The challenge will be in its implementation, and we are pleased that public notice requirements and public hearings will provide opportunities for city staff, members of the public, and industry to discuss wireless facility deployments.” – Elise Kalfayan, Glendale Organized Against Cell Towers (GOACT)

“This is the most strenuous ordinance that I’ve ever seen..I hope the flexibility goes both ways…If it passes as is, we’ll do whatever we can to provide wireless service.” – Richard Roche, AT&T

“In enacting this ordinance, responsibility shifts from the community to staff, and vigilance will be required” – Raymond Quan – Pasadena resident

“This is an evolving industry, and ordinances are evolving also to address it. It was carefully and fairly created, and it should not create service gaps.” – Council member Laura Friedman

Council member Dave Weaver formally introduced the ordinance after the hearing.
