Assembly Candidates’ Answers Match Experience

LWV PHOTOCandidates for the 43rd State Assembly seat are not professional politicians (yet), although two have been on Glendale ballots and one is an elected official. With little political background to draw on, their career experiences were on display in answers they gave at last night’s League of Women Voters forum.

As the League did, I’ll arrange the candidates alphabetically –

Mike Gatto – attorney. He emphasized retooling laws and policies, as well as mediation strategies for dealing with partisan issues.

Chahe Keuroghlian – public relations. He emphasized community involvement and activism, and bringing more diverse voices to the table.

Nayiri Nahabedian – social worker. She said the state’s budget cuts present “false choices” and legislators must find ways to maintain funding for education and social services.

Sunder Ramani – businessman. He stressed the need for fiscal restraint, balanced budgets, and understanding how state laws affect businesses and tax revenues.

Most questions dealt with the state’s fiscal problems. Others were on partisan gridlock, early prison release, health care reform, illegal immigration, and redistricting. Although all candidates favored rescinding the 2/3s majority for enacting budgets, Chahe Keuroghlian and Nayiri Nahabedian were the only two who advocated this step for state tax decisions as well.

The forum was broadcast live on Burbank TV6, and will be rebroadcast several times. Check the schedule webpage for a screening time.
