Under the Paperweight, June 14-20, 2009

Under the Paperweight this week are reports and perspectives on Southern California’s traffic and transportation problems and (lack of coordinated) planning.

A CityWatch editorial lists the reasons why reliable public transportation is not available throughout the region.

Streetsblog LA celebrates an extension of the breakthrough allowing taxis to pick up passengers anywhere in Hollywood, potentially allowing people to take public transportation at least one way to evening events and be assured of finding a ride home.

The LA Times focuses on how miserable traffic on the Westside can harm local businesses as people decide to just stay home instead of going to the gym, going out to eat, or shopping. After spending two hours in my car driving back from the Westside on Friday, I sympathize with the drivers there while I desperately hope Glendale won’t ever get that congested.

The locally-despised 710 Tunnel project figured in a Glendale News Press feature on the conflicts local politicians face between the traffic concerns of local constituents and regional transportation issues.
