A Big, Old Cell Tower on Glendale’s Border
Back in 1996, with almost no notice to neighbors, a full-scale cell tower (NOT a microsite with limited coverage) was placed on commercial property that borders a residential street.
Check out the east side of Sonora Avenue, just north of the 5 Freeway overpass. A large cell tower stands inside what used to be a single-family residential lot. The building on that lot still looks like a home, but commercial businesses occupy it, as they do its neighboring properties. Right behind it, however, are a row of homes, and their occupants can look up and see a cell tower less than 100 feet away.
A Glendale resident who came to the January 7, 2009 Glendale City Council meeting said that cell company maintenance crews disturbed the peace by shining lights, making noise, and conducting maintenance at all hours.
How did such a site ever get approved by the city? It is less than 100 feet away from residences. Wasn’t there any other site close by, in the middle of a solely commercial area, or directly on Sonora Avenue on the west side, where this tower could have been placed?
